If you've ever scrolled through vintage photos of the rich and famous lounging poolside or hosting lavish parties, chances are you've come across the work of Slim Aarons.
Slim's approach? It can be summed up in the way he describes his own work: "Photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places." 💃
If you go into a book of Slim Aaron's work with the mindset that you're ready to spend some time in a fantasy world, it can be a fun trip.
We especially love those film colors. With all the sophisticated film presets and emulations out there, there's still something that just hits about these colors 🎨
Another interesting thing about Slim is the production behind his shoots. He preferred a stripped down approach, avoiding large teams, makeup artists or stylists. He once said, "I never use a stylist, a makeup artist, or a crew. I just go alone."
Alright Slim, we're gonna call you out. We don't totally buy that you NEVER worked with a makeup artist or stylist. But we do like the vibe.
It's hard to imagine shooting the sort of talent and locations Slim covered without a team of at least a dozen people including glam teams, lighting assistants, and more.
We take inspiration from his work, though it often gives a very rose-colored view of the world. The 60s and 70s were full of social upheaval and political tensions. Slim's poolside shoots felt like they were from a parallel universe.
Despite that, Slim was a talented photographer, and there's lots of inspiration the modern photographer can take from him.
He was a master of capturing candid moments, focusing on natural beauty without heavy styling. We also admire his thoughts on simplicity in production, and thought you might get inspired by his work too!

LOVE Slim’s work. Always an inspiration. Have you seen his book Poolside?
Slim Aarons really knew how to capture a moment. There’s something about his work that just makes you want to step into that world – like, who wouldn’t want to lounge by the pool in some hidden villa or throw a casual party with friends? Definitely feeling inspired to go shoot some real, unfiltered moments.
